Our cat has claws frayed and split?

I'm pretty sure it's from fighting - although he doesn't have a scratch on him - but maybe it's something else? I've heard of vitamin deficiency's leading to frayed claws but i've only noticed them frayed this once? And can you clip your cats nails with rabbit nail clippers?
