Recently paid for registration, question about tags?

Well I just paid my late fees on my registration. Can I now drive the car around even though I still have the old sticker? Is it possible to order "temporary tags" that would help in me not getting pulled over? Also the tags are late which expired in May and I am in California if that helps. Thanks.
