Why is my computer screen black?

I'm using Vista and recently whenever I turn on my computer, it loads up with all the start-up screens as normal but when I get to what SHOULD be the desktop, the screen is entirely black with no icons and only the white cursor. I can access programs through the task manager by pressing CTR+ALT+DEL so everything seems to be normal other than that. What is wrong?
